More interesting facts:

One of the most common types of ants is what you probably know as black ants or sugar ants.

The odorous house ant, as they are called, is around 1/8-inch (3 mm) long. Color: Black or dark brown. When their bodies are crushed, these ants give out an odor similar to that of coconut or turpentine, which makes them easy to identify. This ant gets its name from its smell. Geographic Range: All of North America is home to the stinky house ant. Habitat: These ants build their nests under objects on the ground, in landscape mulch, in potted plants, beneath loose bark on trees, under ground cover, and in heaps of objects like bricks, firewood, or timber. Nests can easily be built in walls, under carpeting, within houses, and in other suitable gaps or crevices.

What do they eat?

Odorous house ants consume a wide variety of meals and forage day and night. They consume both dead and living insects, but they also have a strong taste for sweet foods. They particularly enjoy the honeydew that mealybugs and aphids create. Odorous house ant colonies tend to or herd mealybugs and aphids so they can gather the honeydew they exude.

House ants can have strong odors have the ability to grow large colonies with thousands of workers and multiple queens. This species is not very fond of ant baits and could be challenging to manage. Locating and treating the colonies and subcolonies directly are the keys to control. Finding and treating new colonies as they migrate in from nearby homes requires routine inspections and maintenance.

Carpenter Ants Types:
1. Campanotus Modoc (Western carpenter ant): This type is mostly black. (Legs may be colored rusty red.) In the parent nest there is one queen.

2. Camponotus Vicinus: black head, black abdomen (tail section), and rusty red thorax (mid section). In the parent nest are several queens. Other traits shared by most species of carpenter ants are comparable.

Five Sizes: Carpenter ants come in five different sizes, ranging from a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch. One nest will contain all sizes.

Typically, a parent colony of carpenter ants is found outside of potential nesting locations, such as in logs, living or dead trees, stumps, or attractive landscape timber. Satellite colonies are created as the colony grows and needs more space to expand. These satellite colonies frequently grow in adjacent buildings, most likely because they provide warm shelter.
